President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa instructed the officials to study the machinery required for the production of fertilizers, take steps to import them and manufacture locally manufactured machinery with the assistance of the Government Factory and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The President gave these instructions at a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday (02) regarding organic fertilizer production.

They have paid particular attention to the production of fertilizer at the local government level. The President also explained the need to impart technical knowledge to these institutions. The raw material used for the production of organic fertilizer can be sourced from the rural environment itself. The President pointed out that this would preserve the cleanliness and beauty of the village and that it could build a new rural economy with the participation of Samurdhi recipients.

There may be challenges in implementing this program. But in line with the "Vision of Prosperity" policy, it must guarantee the people's right to a non-toxic diet to produce a healthy and productive citizen. Many in the world said it was impossible to be active in the fight against terrorism. The same is true of the organic fertilizer program. The President emphasized that overcoming this was the need of the hour. The President also stated that to make this program a success must provide the farmers with the required amount of organic fertilizer without any shortage.

The Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated that the complete quantity of organic fertilizer required for this purpose is expected to be produced in the country. In case of any shortage, the required amount of organic fertilizer will be imported stored by the Government.

Mr. Mahindananda Aluthgamage said that he would provide a unique program to inspect the soil and recommend only the required quantity when issuing organic fertilizer to farmers and providing the necessary soil testing equipment to all Agrarian Service Centers in the country.

Minister of State Shashindra Rajapaksa said that steps are being taken to impart the necessary technical knowledge to the farmers to produce organic fertilizer. Also decided to provide a series of printed instructions to farmers to make them aware of organic fertilizers.

The President officially handed over the soil testing equipment to the Commissioner-General of Agrarian Services and the Director-General of Agriculture.

Minister of State Mohan de Silva, Secretary to the President PB Jayasundera, Finance Secretary SR. Attygalle, Secretaries and officials of the Ministry of Agriculture, and line state ministries were also present on occasion.
